ArnoldRender is the famous photorealistic rendering system “Unbiased Monte Carlo Radiosity,” currently used by Sony, Glassworks, Sega, Framestore, Digital Domain, The Mill, Psyop, Ubisoft, Zinkia, Kandor, 737 shaker among others, for advertising, animation series and movies like Monster′s House, Beowulf, Alice in Wonderland, 2012 o Lluvia de albóndigas and more.

在Softimage Uber Tage 2010會場上,來自SolidAngle的 Marcos Fajardo與Borja Morales說明了關於Arnold Renderer的一些特性,這得以一窺這個堪稱CG領域中最神秘的算圖引擎。


我大致記載如下:


1. 由SolidAngle與Sony Image Works共同開發。
2. 是一個極為精純的(Pure) Ray-Tracing引擎,他沒有Scanline、Raster或REYES等模式。
3. 跨平台的獨立Library,支援Maya與Softimage,3dsMAX沒有特別提及,但應該是有
4. 最高品質的Ray-traced Soft Shadow,沒有Shadow map這種過時的東西
5. GI/lightmap或者不必存於記憶體或是快取,因此記憶體消耗非常節省!
6. 即時更新並不斷提煉的Progressive互動預覽算圖,只要算過第一次,後面調整許多屬性都無需花時間等待或重來
7. Motion blur或者Depth景深,模型技術Subdivision Surface完全支援
8. 能承受非常高的模型資料量,或者極高解析的貼圖快取,並且仍能保持非常高速的回應
9. 完全支援現有Autodesk Softimage的各種格式,ICE、Hair、Pass、Render Tree等
10. Shader能夠以程式語言被編寫
11. 非常多知名的動畫影視相關行業已經使用了這個引擎,如Digic Pictures, Psyop, etc
12. 影片中展示了數段非常複雜(粗估數十億面的)模型與Motion blur結合,GI與數十億根毛髮等非常誇張的高密度影像,有現場觀眾提問是否消耗很多記憶體,但是主持人說不,不會很多。(西班牙佬說英文有點聽不懂他說啥)
13. 展示了千萬面的模型 + 模糊反射 + SSS + Area light計算Full HD的畫質,在計算Motion Blur時,僅從原本的算圖時間14秒一張,變化為16秒一張。
14. 計算Motion Blur已經進入完全神速的境界,展示某大型動畫場景,開啟或關閉Motion blur效果只差異不到15秒的時間,很難能理解為何他的Motion blur運作如此之快
15. 高速毛髮計算與Soft-shadow完全沒問題,毛髮邊光也能自然的演算,甚至加上Motion Blur
16. 與Vray雷同,Arnold有他自己的Arnold燈光,你必須使用它搭配renderer
17. 是的,GI + Gloss Reflection + RT-Shadow不必等,直接迅速Update,省下大量等待時間
18. 次表面發散SSS也支援即時修改參數並且迅速Update回應效果
19. 對,非常快,不用重複等待是他的重要特性

21. Arnold renderer用來對付Pixar Renderman,具有相當的品質與價格優勢


個人認為,一旦Arnold renderer成功的打入市場,Mental Ray若無突破,將被其無懸念的擊殺。MR的弱點幾乎成為AR的優點,重點是支援MR Shader。
